AARF’s dogs live in foster homes rather than at the AARF House. Dogs can usually be met during the rescue’s Saturday adoption fairs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Interested families should check for schedule updates and confirm that Kai will be attending.
The process begins by submitting an adoption application. Once an application is approved and references have been checked, AARF schedules a home visit. If the rescue and applicant agree that the placement is a good match, the adoption can then be finalized.
Kai’s $300 adoption fee helps cover veterinary care, including neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, a microchip, an initial deworming and flea treatment, and a physical examination.
About Kai
Kai may be his official name, but those who know him call him Pohgo—like a pogo stick. Once you learn about his energetic, enthusiastic personality, the nickname makes perfect sense!
Pohgo approaches life with his entire heart. When he is awake, he is ready to explore, play, learn, and experience everything around him. He is a bold and curious puppy who does not do anything halfway. His lively personality, intelligence, and unmistakable enthusiasm make him an especially memorable little dog.
Because Pohgo has so much energy and excitement, he is currently staying with a professional dog trainer. She is helping him develop the skills and structure he will need as he grows into an adult dog.
Pohgo is already learning that slowing down, using gentle manners, and making thoughtful choices can lead to wonderful things. His future family will need to continue reinforcing those lessons with patience, consistency, and positive training.
A Smart Puppy Who Loves a Challenge
Pohgo is an intelligent and driven puppy who enjoys solving problems. If an obstacle gets in his way, he may climb over it, crawl underneath it, or invent his own creative route around it.
His determination and curiosity could make training especially rewarding for someone who enjoys working with bright, active dogs. He is currently being introduced to several important foundational skills, including:
Crate training
Potty training
Walking on a leash
Tethering
Luring and reward-based training
Remaining calm while contained
Becoming more comfortable when people leave the room
Luring uses a reward to help guide a puppy into a desired position or movement. It can provide the foundation for teaching helpful cues such as “sit,” “down,” and “come.”
Pohgo’s adopter will not have to begin completely from scratch. His trainer plans to provide his future family with a preparation package explaining his daily schedule, current training, strengths, challenges, favorite things, and the tools that help him succeed.
Playtime, Toys, and Puppy Adventures
Like many young puppies, Pohgo explores the world with his mouth. He is especially interested in toys that move, crinkle, or make interesting sounds. Providing plenty of safe, appropriate toys will help satisfy his curiosity and teach him which objects are meant for chewing and playing.
Pohgo would love a home that offers a combination of physical activity, mental stimulation, structured training, and supervised exploration. His active mind needs opportunities to work just as much as his energetic body needs opportunities to move.
He is also quite the conversationalist! Pohgo likes to “talk” while he eats, while he plays, and sometimes simply because he has something to say. His vocal commentary may sound dramatic, but it is part of the funny, expressive personality that makes him so special.
Underneath all of that puppy energy is a gentle and affectionate little soul. Once he has played, explored, and gotten his wiggles out, Pohgo loves settling down for snuggles with his people.
Other Pets and Children
Pohgo is friendly with people, dogs, and cats. Because he is still learning how to manage his excitement and control his growing body, he may accidentally overwhelm someone during an especially enthusiastic moment.
A home with older children would likely be the best fit for him. Older children may be better able to participate in his training and interact with him safely without being accidentally knocked over by his puppy exuberance.
Any resident pets should still be introduced thoughtfully. His future family should supervise interactions and continue teaching him how to play appropriately and respectfully with both people and animals.
Kai’s Ideal Home
Pohgo needs a family that understands he is not a calm, fully trained adult dog—he is an energetic, intelligent puppy who is still learning about the world. His adopter should be genuinely excited to continue his education and help shape his enthusiasm into positive behaviors.
He would thrive with someone who appreciates active, driven dogs and wants a companion for an adventurous lifestyle. As he grows, he may enjoy activities that challenge both his body and his mind.
His ideal family will provide:
Consistent, reward-based training
Daily physical activity and supervised play
Mental enrichment and problem-solving opportunities
Plenty of appropriate toys
Continued support with potty and crate training
Patient guidance when he becomes overexcited
Help learning to settle and spend short periods alone
Affection and plenty of snuggle time
A commitment to training throughout puppyhood and adolescence
Pohgo has a big personality, an active mind, and incredible potential. With the right guidance, he can grow into an amazing companion who brings adventure, laughter, affection, and plenty of lively conversation into his future family’s life.
If you are looking for a smart, brave, affectionate puppy and are excited to help him become the best dog he can be, Kai—better known as Pohgo—may be your perfect match.
