Wendy: A Joyful Pittie Who Overcame Heartworms and a Painful Past

Location: Birmingham, Alabama at Underdog Rescue of Alabama

Breed: Pit Bull Terrier Mix
Age: Approximately 2 years old
Gender: Female

Wendy arrived at Underdog Rescue of Alabama severely underweight, heartworm-positive, and suffering from a painful case of happy tail. Today, she is healthy, joyful, and ready to begin an entirely new chapter.

Despite everything Wendy endured, she has remained incredibly affectionate and happy. She approaches life with playful energy and a goofy personality that spreads joy wherever she goes.

Wendy’s Transformation

When Wendy entered rescue, she needed time and significant medical care. Her happy tail was so severe that her tail had to be surgically docked to prevent recurring injuries.

She also completed heartworm treatment and has officially tested heartworm-free. Wendy gained the healthy weight she needed, was spayed, received her vaccinations, and is now ready for a permanent family.

Her transformation is a testament to her resilience and the care she received. Wendy did not allow her difficult beginning to change her loving spirit.

Life With Wendy

Wendy is energetic, curious, funny, and always ready to play. She would thrive with an active family that can give her plenty of exercise, enrichment, and involvement in everyday activities.

She may enjoy:

  • Daily walks and outdoor adventures

  • Games and interactive toys

  • Positive training sessions

  • Playtime with compatible dogs

  • Cuddling with her people

  • Exploring a securely fenced yard

  • Learning new skills for treats

Although Wendy loves activity, she also needs help practicing calm behavior and developing good household manners. Consistent, reward-based training will allow her to channel her excitement while building a strong relationship with her adopter.

Dogs, Cats, and Children

Wendy’s Petfinder profile lists her as good with dogs, cats, and children. Introductions to resident pets should still be gradual and appropriately supervised.

Her playful energy may be best appreciated by children who are comfortable around an enthusiastic medium-sized dog. Families should speak directly with Underdog Rescue about Wendy’s individual experiences and arrange a meet-and-greet when appropriate.

Wendy’s Ideal Home

Wendy is searching for people who will appreciate her fun-loving personality and continue showing her how wonderful life can be.

Her ideal family will provide:

  • Regular exercise and active play

  • Continued positive training

  • Mental enrichment and engaging toys

  • Safe introductions to resident animals

  • Plenty of affection and companionship

  • Routine veterinary and preventive care

  • A lifelong commitment

Her family should also maintain year-round heartworm prevention as recommended by their veterinarian. Completing treatment does not protect a dog from future infections.
