About Petey
Meet Petey, an 8-year-old Terrier Mix who’s a happy, sweet senior with a heart full of love! This 55-pound bundle of joy was rescued from a North Carolina shelter and is now thriving in a foster home with Petey and Furends in Washington, DC. Petey loves people, gets along great with other dogs (with proper introductions), and even seems to do well with cats. Whether he’s sunbathing in the backyard, cuddling on the couch, or joining you for neighborhood walks, Petey’s gentle and sociable nature makes him the perfect companion for an active, loving family.
Characteristics
Affectionate & Friendly: Petey loves people, kids, and cuddling, making him a true snuggle buddy.
Social: He gets along well with dogs (with slow introductions) and appears compatible with cats.
Smart: Petey knows sit, stay, and shake, and is working on down, showing his eagerness to learn.
Moderate Persistence: As an “Orange - Wallflower” dog, he’s internally motivated but not overly driven, thriving with regular interaction and activity.
Health and Care
Petey is neutered, up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations, and microchipped. He’s completed heartworm treatment, a common and treatable condition for shelter dogs from the South, and takes his pills easily (especially with peanut butter!). Petey is house-trained, crate-trained, and in good health, with a veterinary check completed in January 2025. His adoption fee of $350 covers his vaccines, neuter, collar, transport to Washington, DC, and foster care. Any additional veterinary needs are covered by a voucher provided with adoption.
Petey’s Story
Petey, an estimated 8-year-old Terrier Mix, was rescued from a North Carolina shelter and brought to Petey and Furends in Washington, DC, where he’s been thriving in foster care since January 2025. This happy sweetie has a knack for winning hearts with his love for people, kids, and other dogs (with proper introductions). Petey’s already enjoyed adventures like camping, beach trips, and brewery visits, handling them like a champ despite his dislike for the ocean. He’s a pro at sunbathing, cuddling on the couch, and taking baths, and he’s learning leash manners with a harness, though his love for sniffing everything keeps him busy!
Petey’s foster family praises his sweet demeanor and trainability—he knows sit, stay, and shake, and is working on down. While he’s strong on walks and loves to explore, he settles well with the right support. As an “Orange - Wallflower” dog, Petey is moderately persistent, happy to work for what he wants but not overly driven, making him a great fit for adopters who can provide regular activity and training. With his heartworm treatment complete, Petey is ready to repay his new family with endless love and tail wags.
Ideal Home
Petey would thrive in an active, loving home with a securely fenced yard for sunbathing and playtime. He’s great with kids and people, making him ideal for families, and he gets along with dogs (with slow introductions) and possibly cats, though he’d also be content as the only pet. His adopters should be committed to ongoing obedience training and providing mental and physical exercise to help him shine. A urban or suburban home with space for walks and a patient, supportive environment will suit Petey perfectly. Owners who enjoy cuddly evenings and outdoor adventures will find Petey to be a loyal, joyful companion.
